Strategies for helping children coping with depression in school
Mental illness can greatly impact a child's academics, as well as their school environment. Alberta Education acknowledges the challenges of mental illness and have invested resources in promotion, prevention, and treatment for students.
Once depression is recognized and an intervention has taken place, staff and faculty within a child's school can use strategies to help and improve students school life. Strategies may include:
-Teaching a student to set goals
-Teaching problem solving skills
-Accommodate within the classroom in regards to student's mood or concentration
-Develop an effective communication system between the school and the child's parents/guardians, keeping in contact about academic, social, and emotional behaviours.
